Avapro is used to treat high blood pressure. A member of the new family of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists, it works by preventing the hormone angiotensin II from narrowing the blood vessels, an action that tends to raise blood pressure. Avapro may be prescribed alone or with other blood pressure medications. In people with type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, Avapro is also prescribed to stave off damage to the kidneys, often delaying the need for dialysis and a kidney transplant. Generic avapro is available on the market.

In people taking Avapro for diabetic kidney disease, the most common side effect is dizziness.
Why should this drug not be prescribed?
If Avapro gives you an allergic reaction, you will not be able to use this drug.
Special warnings about this medication
In rare cases, Avapro can cause a severe drop in blood pressure. The problem is more likely if your body's supply of water has been depleted by dialysis treatments or high doses of diuretics. Symptoms include light-headedness, dizziness, and faintness, and are more likely when you first start taking the drug. Call your doctor if they occur. You may need to have your dose adjusted. If you have kidney disease, Avapro must be used with caution.
Possible food and drug interactions
The chances of an interaction with Avapro are low. Check with your doctor, however, before combining it with tolbutamide (Orinase).
Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding Avapro can cause injury or even death to the unborn child when used during the last 6 months of pregnancy. As soon as you learn you're pregnant, stop taking Avapro and call your doctor. It is not known whether Avapro appears in breast milk, but because of potential risks to the newborn, it's considered best to avoid using the drug while breastfeeding. You and your doctor should decide whether to give up nursing or discontinue Avapro.
Recommended dosage
ADULTS:
High Blood Pressure
How to use
The recommended starting dose of Avapro is 150 milligrams once a day. If your blood pressure remains elevated, your dose will be gradually increased to 300 milligrams once a day. If you are being treated with hemodialysis or high doses of diuretics, you'll be started at a lower dose of 75 milligrams once a day.
Kidney Damage from Diabetes
The usual dose is 300 milligrams once a day.
CHILDREN:
For children under 6, safety and effectiveness have not been established. For children 6 to 12 years old, the typical starting dose is 75 milligrams once a day. If blood pressure is still too high, the dose may be increased to 150 milligrams once a day. Children 13 to 16 years old are usually given the adult dosage.
Overdosage
There has been little experience with overdosage of drugs such as Avapro. However, the most likely results would be low blood pressure and an abnormally slow or rapid heartbeat. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
Caution! Before starting to take this medicine, it is vital that you should consult your doctor! Do not use it on your own initiative, without medical advice.
Avapro notes:
Avapro is a member of the new family of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists and is used in treating high blood pressure. It works by stopping the hormone angiotensin II from thinning the blood vessels which is responsible for raising blood pressure. Having the generic name irbesartan or irbesartan hydrochlorothiazide, it is prescribed alone or in combination with other blood pressure medications. Avapro irbesartan is also prescribed for people with type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, along with the warding off of kidney damage, thereby delaying the requirement for dialysis and a kidney transplant. Taking Avapro regularly can be very effective in declining blood pressure gradually, and it may take a couple of weeks for getting the full benefit of Avapro. Consumption of the drug has to be continued for feeling well. Rather than curing high blood pressure, Avapro helps in keeping it under control.
Generic avapro comes with some common side effects. avapro side effects include Diarrhea, fatigue, respiratory tract infection. Heartburn and indigestion are some rare acapro effects. Abdominal bloating, bronchitis, arthritis, bruising, chest pain, bursitis, chills, congestion, constipation, difficulty breathing, depression, drowsinessear pain, , ear infection, emotional disturbances, eye infection, face swelling, eye problems, etc are rare side effects. Anti-Aging news:
Anti aging gene reduces hypertension – says scientists.
Researchers from University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Centre have recently found a new anti aging gene called klotho which the scientists claim reduces hypertension. It has been hypothesized that klotho gene reduces hypertension and subsequent renal damage. High blood pressure poses risk for stroke, heart attack, arterial aneurysm and kidney failure.
In a study conducted on rats, five groups of male rats with each group having 5 rats were taken of which four groups had been induced with spontaneous hypertension called spontaneous hypertensive rat (SHRs) group and the fifth group as control. Researchers constructed a virus carrying mouse klotho cDNA (AAV.mKL). Four groups of SHRs were injected with AAV.mKL, AAV.LacZ, AAV.GFP and PBS, respectively and the control group was given PBS. In the AAV.mKL group, increase in blood pressure was stopped whereas blood pressures continued to increase in other SHR groups. A single dose of AAV.mKL prevented the progression of spontaneous hypertension for at least 12 weeks. AAV.mKL increased plasma interleukin 10 levels but decreased Nox2 expression, NADPH oxidise activity and superoxide production in kidneys and aorta. It also stopped renal tubular atrophy and dilation, tubular deposition of proteinaceous material, glomerular collapse and collagen deposition which were found in other SHRs, indicating that klotho gene delivery prevented renal damage.
This indicates that the suppressed klotho expression plays a role in the progress of hypertension and renal damage. It is found that Klotho gene expression decreases with age. AAV delivery of klotho may offer a new approach for the long term control of hypertension and renoprotection. The virus has been approved by the USFDA for use in humans.
Caloric restriction slows aging in overweight people
According to a research conducted at pennington biomedical research center have revealed that calorie restriction(CR) reduces bio markers of aging in overweight subjects.
In the study called CALERIE(Comprehensive Assessment of the Long Term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy), a randomized controlled trial was done to examine the impact of 6 months of calorie restriction on longevity. Forty eight overweight (non-obese) men and women were divided into four groups, a control group on a weight-maintenance diet, a group on a 25 percent CR diet, a group on a 12.5 percent CR diet with exercise program having 12.5 percent increase in energy expenditure and a very low-calorie diet group. After 6 months, all the three intervention group had significant weight change with largest in the low calorie group.
All the groups except control group had significantly reduced fasting insulin levels whereas DHEA and glucose levels were unchanged. The core temperature was reduced in CR and CR with exercise group. All the groups except control group also demonstrated reduction in 24 hour energy expenditure showing metabolic adaptation in response to the energy deficit. Protein carbonyl concentrations were not changed in any group. All the intervention groups also had reduction in DNA damage.
